Become A Coach

Thank you for your interest in becoming a coach. As a coach, you will take a lead role to help SOWA fulfill its mission, and in doing so you will make a major contribution to the lives of people with intellectual disabilities; a contribution that will enrich you as much as it does the athletes.

Level 1 Training:
Special Olympics Washington believes in having well trained coaches with sports specific and Special Olympics knowledge. General Special Olympics knowledge (Level 1) is obtained through completion of the General Orientation and Protective Behaviors training.

Level 2 Training:
Sports and specific Special Olympics sports rules training. Training is obtained through attendance at sports-specific training sessions, which are offered throughout the state at the beginning of each sports season. In order to maintain Level II coach status, individuals are required to complete continuing education coursework every four years and take a re-certification test in their sport. (Level II training sessions are region specific)

* Coaches who have completed the Level 1 (General Orientation & Protective Behavior exams) and Level 2 (sport specific training) are eligible to take the American Sport Education Program (ASEP) online coaching courses designed to meet the continuing education or Level III training requirement of the Special Olympics Washington Coach Education Program. These sport-specific Coaching Youth [Sport] e-courses are now available for basketball, soccer, softball, tennis volleyball and sports first-aid. ASEP is currently working to develop online courses for each recognized Special Olympics sport and will have them online as soon as they are available.

Level 3 Training:
Special Olympics Washington coaches who have completed the Level One (General Session and Protective Behaviors) and Level II sport-specific training are eligible to take ASEP's online Coaching Youth [Sport] e-courses to maintain or upgrade certification in their respective sports.

Level 3 coaches have obtained alternative sports skills training through ASEP or advanced sports skills training at the annual Coaches Conference held in September.
