Coaches Education

Special Olympics Washington (SOWA) offer education and training for coaches and volunteers. Meetings and training sessions assist coaches in planning for local sports activities, current athlete and sport information, and help prepare for upcoming tournaments. For more information about local regional meetings and training, select the appropriate region from the map below or contact the Training Manager from your region.  
   

Requirements For Coaches Certification (Level 1)

The General Orientation and Protective Behaviors courses are mandatory for all new and current coaches in order to be certified through Special Olympics. If you are a current coach and unsure if you have taken these courses, please contact your regional director.
  You must receive a 70% on the quiz in order to pass.
A follow up email will be sent to you with your score from Brooke Reece, Coaches Education and Training Manager.

Requirements For Coaches Certification (Level 2)
  Sports and specific Special Olympics sports rules training. Training is obtained through attendance at sports-specific training sessions, which are offered throughout the state at the beginning of each sports season. In order to maintain Level II coach status, individuals are required to complete continuing education coursework every four years and take a re-certification test in their sport.  
 
Requirements For Coaches Certification (Level 3)  
  Coaches who have completed the Level 1 (General Session and Protective Behaviors) and Level 2 (sport -specific training) are eligible to take ASEP's online Coaching Youth [Sport] e-cources to maintain or upgrade certification in their respective sports.  
   
   
     
  Coaches may purchase the ASEP online Coaching Youth [Sport] e-courses by credit card for the Special Olympics discount price of $19.95 by following the instructions below.  
  • Go to http://www.asep.com/asep_content/org/SONA.cfm
• Review the introductory page.
• Click on "Course Catalog" on the left-hand menu bar
• Complete registration for the desired sport-specific course. Available courses are found at the bottom of the page.
 
       
    The US $19.95 course fee includes access to the course and a PDF version of both the Coaching Youth [Sport] book.  
       
    After completing the course, students take a 30-question online exam (a score of 80 percent is passing) and are sent a certificate. Coaches are also registered in the Special Olympics database for verification of course completion.
