Special Olympics Washington offers a variety of volunteer opportunities available at both the region and state level. After reading the job summary, certification requirements, and approximate time commitment, please check the volunteer positions you would like more information about.
Coaches
  Volunteers work with athletes to improve their fitness, develop their athletic skills and prepare for competitions. Head coaches must be 18 years or older, attend a one day coaches training school, a three hour general session, complete a ten hour practicum and have a current Washington State Patrol(WSP) - National Background Clearance. Assistant coaches must be 16 years or older and have a current WSP - National Background Clearance. Approximate time commitment: 5-10 hours per week for 12 weeks each sport season.

Unified Sports
  Unified Sports is a Special Olympics program that brings together athletes with and without intellectual disabilities on teams for training and competition. Unified Coaches must complete the same certification as Head Coaches plus a three-hour Unified Sports training. Unified Partners must complete a partner release form and have a current WSP - National Background Clearanceclearance. Approximate time commitment: 5-10 hours per week for 12 weeks each sports season.

Drivers/Chaperones
  Drivers and Chaperones accompany teams to practices and competitions. Drivers must have a valid WA drivers license and valid auto insurance, be 25 or older (to drive a rental vehicle), or be at least 18 or older with own vehicle. Both drivers and chaperones must have a current WSP - National Background Clearance. Chaperones must be 18 or older to chaperone without another adult. Approximate time commitment: 5-10 hours per week for 12 weeks each sports season.
Sports Event Committee
  Event Committee members plan and execute all aspects of a tournament or competition event with the support of Special Olympics professional staff. Each committee member is responsible for a particular area of the tournament. Washington Committee members must be 18 years or older and have a current WSP - National Background Clearance. Approximate time commitment: 3-5 hours per week for 12 weeks each sports season. Some typical event committee positions are:
Sports Coordinator: Organizes/runs a sports competition
Ceremonies Coordinator: Organizes/runs Opening Ceremonies
Olympic Town Coordinator: Organizes/runs Olympic Town (activities, entertainment)
Victory Dance Coordinator: Organizes/runs Victory Dance (theme, music, decorations)
Awards Coordinator: Organizes/runs Awards and Medal Ceremonies
Meals Coordinator: Organizes preparation and delivery of meals
Medical Coordinator: Organizes, secures and supervises medical services
Sports Event Volunteer
  Event volunteers support local, region and state events throughout the year. No special skills are required and training is provided. Approximate time commitment: 4-8 hours/event. Typical volunteer positions for event volunteers are:
Competition Volunteer: Scorekeepers, timers, line judges, court monitors, officials
Special Events Volunteer: Stage managers, dance decorators, activity leaders
Meals/Hospitality Volunteer: Lunch packers, delivery persons, servers
Awards Volunteer: Stagers, announcers, and presenters.

Special Projects / Fundraising Support
  Volunteers donate their time and talents by working on a special project needed by Special Olympics Washington. Some examples of special projects are fund-raising events, in-kind donations, graphic design, merchandising and public relations. WSP - National Background Clearance maybe required.
Administrative Support
  Administrative volunteers provide general office support to Special Olympics Washington professional staff. Responsibilities may include data entry, copying, collating, filing, mailing and telephoning. Must be available during regular office hours.
