Vancouver 2010

Vancouver, British Columbia, was chosen to host the next Winter Olympic Games in the year 2010. Vancouver is only about 60 miles north of the Mount Vernon area- practically in our own backyard. We should learn lots of inside info on what it takes to make the Olympics happen.

Let's find out about the mayor of the city of Vancouver, Mr. Sam Sullivan. His is an interesting story that may inspire many of us Special Olympians.

Mr. Sullivan was to take part in the Closing Ceremony of this past winter's Olympics. In this ceremony, an official of the current host city waves the Olympic Flag eight times, then hands it off to an official of the next host city, who then also waves it eight times. The flag was being passed from Turin to Mr. Sullivan of Vancouver.

But this presented a problem for Sam Sullivan.

For the past 27 years he has been confined to a wheelchair. He was in a bad skiing accident as a teenager, leaving him a quadriplegic. He has only a little use of his hands so grabbing a flag was out of the question, let alone waving it.

A suggestion was made that someone else could hold the flag next to Sam's wheelchair. But Sam wanted no part of that as he wanted to wave the flag himself! He ended up creating an adaptive flag holder so he could wave the Olympic flag proudly for Vancouver when he received it.

Keep watch for more on Sam Sullivan. He will be in the news a lot in the months ahead.
