Special
Olympics Washington announced that Seattle Sounders
FC head coach, Sigi Schmid, will be the keynote
speaker at the Breakfast With Champions fundraiser
on Friday, June 12, 2009 at the Washington State
Convention & Trade Center from 7:15 –
8:45 a.m. The event sponsor is Comcast.
Coach Schmid will address
over 1,000 local business, civic and community
leaders with proceeds benefiting Special Olympics
Washington.
Schmid, who leads the Seattle Sounders
FC as head coach during its inaugural season,
is the most successful active coach in Major League
Soccer history. Since 1999, his teams have won
two MLS cups while reaching
the final four more times. For his efforts, he
has twice earned the MLS Coach of the Year award.
Prior to coaching at a championship
level in the professional ranks, Schmid had similar
success at the collegiate level. He served as
head coach for the UCLA men’s soccer team
for 19 years, during which time his teams won
three NCAA Championships. In addition, he has
coached at the national level including serving
twice as the U.S. Under-20 National Team head
coach.
Beth Wojick, Chief Executive Officer
of Special Olympics Washington is pleased that
Schmid is able to speak at the Breakfast With
Champions saying, "Coach Schmid is a proven
champion at both the collegiate and professional
level, but more importantly he has shown a deep
interest in improving the lives of the people
in this community. We're thrilled to team up with
Sounders FC and Coach Schmid for the Breakfast
with Champions."
In its 15th year, Breakfast With
Champions is the largest annual fundraiser for
Special Olympics Washington. At the event, Schmid
will share the stage with several of the athletes
with intellectual disabilities who participate
in a variety of Olympic-type sports each year
in the state of Washington. The support Special
Olympics Washington athletes receive from local
businesses and community is critical, as those
who participate in Special Olympics Washington
programs do so at no cost to them or their families.

the Breakfast With Champions please contact Vicki

FSN
Raises Awareness of intellectual disabilities
For over 10 years FSN has significantly raised the
profile of those with intellectual disabilities
(ID) by partnering with Special Olympics Washington.
FSN is dedicated to making an impact on those who
utilize sports as a means to teach positive lessons,
overcome obstacles and improve quality of life.
Through its involvement in Winter and Summer Games,
FSN delivers our message of diversity, inclusion,
and community sustainability to 3.4 million homes
in our region.
Throughout the summer, FSN plans to feature Special
Olympics Washington athletes in promotional spots
during Seattle Mariners post-game shows. On Thursday,
April 23, FSN featured athlete Kristie Clark, who
competes in figure skating, speed skating, aquatics,
among other sports. Kristie has been involved
with Special Olympics for close to 25 years and
won four gold medals at the statewide Winter Games
in March.
An avid Mariners fan, Clark was enjoying the game
at Safeco Field last week when FSN on-air personality
Jen Mueller interviewed her. Struck by Kristie's
"enthusiasm and positive attitude," Mueller
admired "her passion for sports, competition,
and life. What an inspiration!" Kristie's mother,
Elaine Nave, notes that Kristie's sports training
and competition have "made her blossom. It's
really brought her out of her shell." Kristie
shows her enthusiasm by cheering on her favorite
Mariners: Ichiro and Ken Griffey, Jr.
Special Olympics Washington recognizes FSN for its
dedication to raising awareness that those with
intellectual disabilities are capable members of
our communities. On behalf of our 6,700 athletes,
we thank you!
